The research team in Munich University, Germany and their international collaborators has explored excellent applications of ultra thin DLC (Diamond-like Carbon) film to generate quasi-monoenergetic electron bunches and carbon ion acceleration by ultrahigh contrast laser pulses. The peak quasi-monoenergetic electron spectrum is at 30MeV which is very promising to be used to generate brilliant X-ray beams by the coherent reflection of a second laser. In additions, an unprecedented maximum energy of 185 MeV (15 MeV/u) for fully ionized carbon atoms is observed under the irradiation by the laser pulses. The ultra thin DLC film is prepared by Pulse Filtered Cathodic Vacuum Arc P-FCVA source manufactured by Plasma Technology Limited. The arc source has equipped with pulse-to-pulse control functions so as to precise control of the deposition thickness. The curved filter has effectively filtered out the macroparticles or droplets from the arc to ensure the reproducible high quality films.
